Des Plaines, IL
Projeo Corporation, a subsidiary of GTI International, has announced it has been selected to receive U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) funding to support research on CO2 capture and storage complex feasibility. Projeo’s selected project, the Grays Harbor CO2 Capture and Storage Hub, intends to determine the feasibility of storing 50 million metric tons of CO2 within a 30-year timeframe at a storage complex in Grays Harbor County, Washington.
Projeo’s Grays Harbor CO2 Capture and Storage Hub will support the Carbon Storage Assurance Facility Enterprise (CarbonSAFE) Initiative managed by DOE’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM). Projeo is one of twelve recipients selected for CarbonSAFE Phase II: Storage Complex Feasibility. Phase II projects evaluate initial reservoir characteristics to determine if the reservoir is suitable for geologic storage, address technical and non-technical challenges that may arise, and develop a risk assessment and CO2 management strategy for the project.
“The long-term viability of CO2 capture and storage is critical to advancing a low-carbon energy future,” said Nick Malkewicz, President of Projeo. “Investments in projects like the Grays Harbor CO2 Capture and Storage Hub will drive the research we need to meet this challenge safely, responsibly, and effectively.”
The Grays Harbor project’s objectives will be achieved primarily through supplemental subsurface data acquisition efforts, including a new stratigraphic test well and the acquisition of existing commercially available 2D seismic data. Information gathered will be used to update geologic, reservoir, and geomechanical models to inform technical and economic feasibility.
Projeo will clarify project risks and conduct mitigation and monitoring planning and CO2 source and transport planning. The team will also analyze contractual and regulatory requirements and assess technical and economic feasibility. A Phase-III work plan, an Underground Injection Control (UIC) Class VI application plan, and a community benefits plan will be developed as part of this project.
